BookBase
Online repository and search tool for books
Project background
Before I joined the Kaleido team, they have asked me to do an assessment to make sure I was a good fit for them. I had to design a mobile app for a platform that serves as an online repository for books and it had to be done in under two days.
The prompt
BookBase is a platform that serves as an online repository and search tool for books. The platform provides users with extensive search functionality and ways to contribute to the book database. Sketch out the comprehensive way of categorizing the books, so that the user can search by different genres and tags allowing him to find specific books. No effort should be invested in creating high-fidelity screens, we’re interested in seeing your UX skills and problem-solving abilities, focus on the functionality and the needs of the user. Select one of the features (or 1-2 screens) to create a more high-fidelity design for it. The designs can be for either a web or mobile application, feel free to choose which option you'd like.

The process
1. User research
A quick research was done in under one hour. Studied the existing products that provide similar services in order to identify key patterns and trends in user behavior, and what are the most useful features.
2. Brainstorming
Using the insights from the research, I’ve synthesized the structure of the app and the features that were going to make BookBase a pleasant experience. This was done as well in under one hour.
3. Wireframing
Based on the ideas gathered from brainstorming phase, I started wireframing the main features of the app in Figma. This phase took 2 hours to complete.
4. Creating the prototype
The main focus here was the usability, so visuals weren’t a priority. It took me about 6 hours to make a easy to navigate prototype and add in some basic animations.
